School Entry: Grammar 11+
Grammar schools are state secondary schools that require pupils to sit an entry exam known as the 11+ to secure their place. There are two main Grammar School 11+ test types, GL and CEM. Which exam board your child will sit varies by region. The test is typically taken early in Year 6, but pupils are encouraged to start preparing for the test at least a year in advance as they will need to have an in-depth understanding of the KS2 curriculum.
Both GL and CEM assessments test the pupil’s skills in reasoning, mathematics and English, though the format of both tests differs. GL covers the four 11+ subjects (mathematics, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning) though a school may choose not to test in all areas. CEM covers verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. There is a great deal of overlap between the skills covered in CEM’s verbal reasoning and GL’s English exam. The same can be said for GL's maths exam and CEM’s numerical reasoning questions.
We have assisted hundreds of pupils into leading secondary schools in London and across the UK. Our success lies in working with a small group of highly experienced tutors with access to excellent resources. Any tutor who assists your child with preparation for school entrance will have already been successful in helping another pupil gain a place at a school of the same calibre.
