Common Entrance & Scholarship

Common Entrance

The ISEB Common Entrance exams are taken by pupils to gain entry to select senior independent schools at 11+ or 13+. A candidate needs to have already been offered a place at the senior school subject to their passing the examinations. You can see the list of schools that require your child to sit the Common Entrance exams at 11+ here and at 13+ here.

Children in year 6 taking the 11+ Common Entrance exams will be mainly those applying to girls schools. These tests are closely linked to the national curriculum and cover English, Maths, Creative Writing and Science. Children taking the 13+ examination will cover the original core subjects (English, Maths and Science) alongside modern foreign languages, classics, history, geography and religious education.

We have assisted hundreds of pupils into leading day and boarding schools in London and across the UK. Our success lies in working with a small group of highly experienced tutors with access to excellent resources. Any tutor who assists your child with preparation for school entrance will have already been successful in helping another pupil gain a place at a school of the same calibre.

Scholarship

For entry at 13+, some schools award scholarships in a variety of subjects to pupils who excel in that area. There are the ISEB Common Academic Scholarship exams in mathematics, English, science, French, Latin, history and geography, as well as school-specific scholarship exams in many more subjects such as music, sports and art. You can see which schools use the Common Academic Scholarship at 13+ here.

Many schools require the candidate to sit specific scholarship papers while others are automatically awarded to the highest achievers in their entrance exams. Past papers are notoriously difficult to come by, which is why having a tutor with school-specific knowledge can be a huge advantage when preparing for scholarship exams.
